How the Technology in Oil Production Has Evolved Over the Years

There has been evolution in oil production technology today compared to how it was in the past as you will learn more here. Considering the value of oil to our lives, it is suitable to review the changes that have followed its discovery. The ancient people in Mesopotamia used a hardened substance called bitumen to construct sailing vessels and put jewelry pieces together. The pharaohs in Egypt used the substance to make the pyramids stand tall. These minerals which oozed to the surface freely requiring no extraction equipment led to the discovery of oil.

The first method used to extract oil was by digging up the soil to reach the oil. The people living in this period used oil to heal diseases, light their lamps and heat their houses. Following the lack of valuable knowledge about oil as read in this site, there many false assumptions about oil fields at the time.

The next discovery to be made as you will find here, was the spring pole. This apparatus which was connected to a tree was made popular by the Ruffner brothers with the intention of reaching more salt deeper in the earth. Oil was still not the primary goal but the people believed it could serve several purposes. However when steam power was introduced, the brothers were able to drill salt at a faster rate. A chemist at Yale by the name Benjamin Silliman discovered more about distillation of oil into Kerosene that could be used in lamps to provide lighting and even cook. After the discovery by Benjamin, there was more interest in this product and commercial extraction could be seen as you’ll see here.

As you will find out in this website, the demand for oil was to rise in the near future. More oil deposits were also discovered deeper in the earth. However there were hard sediments that made drilling difficult hence the need for improved equipment. Thus the rotary whose drill head went deeper past the sediment without the need to clear the debris constantly was developed. One historic moment was witnessed in Texas where a rig in Beaumont struck oil and it rose to the surface trickling like rain water. Because the world was getting ready for the first war, the need for oil skyrocketed leading to the development of better oil tools as a result of competition. The greatest achievement for the rotary drill was the ability to reach greater depths that the spring pole wouldn’t.

Today, the most common method of extracting oil is the rotary rig. Besides been in use, the equipment has had significant changes technologically to improve efficiency. As you will see here, the rigs are enhanced compared to the past. For example ,as you see here is that one rig can drill multiple oil wells and even move on their own.
